Selling Original
Paintings, Online.
A field guide for one faceless artist, working alone in a Jaipur studio — at two or three hours a week, starting from the dark.
How to Use This Roadmap
Read Parts 0–2 once. Then live inside Part 3, descending to a Playbook whenever a task needs more light.
The strategy, in one breath
Discover → Engage → Move to WhatsApp → Close → Fulfil → Repeat. You are found on Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube; you speak in DMs; you close the sale on WhatsApp with a UPI payment; you ship; and you summon past buyers back. Every task in this guide serves one stage of that descent.
The legend
Through Part 3, every task is marked with a sign so you can read it at a glance:
How it is organised
- Part 1 — the big picture: Plan A vs Plan B and the master descent.
- Part 2 — the channel stack: every platform, its role, when it wakes.
- Part 3 — the timeline: five phases, each sealed by a decision gate.
- Part 4 — the playbooks: deep how-to for each repeating rite.
- Part 5 — the appendix: projections, the scorecard, artists to study, the festival year-wheel, what not to do, and honest caveats.
What changed in the 2026-05-20 refresh
This guide was raised from two research dossiers written in late 2025 / early 2026. Time-sensitive facts were re-verified on 2026-05-20:
COD is no longer ~60% of orders. Cash-on-delivery has fallen to roughly 25–30% of Indian e-commerce orders nationally as UPI became the default; it holds at ~58–65% only in tier-2/3 cities and with low-trust buyers. Default to prepaid UPI.
India Post Speed Post raised rates on 1 Oct 2025 — new weight-slab pricing, and GST now applies. Pinterest now reports 631 million global monthly users (Q1 2026). Etsy India listing fee is USD 0.20, payment processing 5% + ₹25, plus a 0.29% India regulatory operating fee. Artshaili charges 20% + a one-time ₹999-per-painting lifetime fee.
Every money fact here was true on 2026-05-20, but marketplace fees and tax rules shift often. Re-check each platform's own terms before you list or invoice. Confirmed unchanged: GST on original paintings is 5%, without input tax credit; Etsy Indian shops are international-only; Saatchi Art commission is 40%.
The Big Picture: Plan A vs Plan B
You begin with Plan A regardless. The only question is whether, and when, you let Plan B in.
The two plans
- Plan A — Pure Online. Instagram + Pinterest + WhatsApp + YouTube + Etsy + one Indian marketplace. Fits the 2–3 hr/week constraint. ~₹0 upfront. Scales without limit.
- Plan B — Online + Jaipur Offline. Everything in Plan A, plus café/hotel consignment walls and interior-designer outreach. Needs 3–4 hr/week (above the stated constraint) and ₹3,500–8,000 upfront for framing and a portfolio booklet.
Plan A vs Plan B, weighed
| Dimension | Plan A — Pure Online | Plan B — Online + Jaipur Offline |
|---|---|---|
| Time required | 2–3 hr/week (fits) | 3–4 hr/week (exceeds constraint) |
| Upfront cost | ~₹0 (+ $10 Etsy) | ~₹3,500–8,000 |
| Year-1 realistic revenue | ~₹49,000 | ₹70,000–85,000 |
| Revenue ceiling | Very high (NRI / global) | Medium-high (locally capped) |
| Scalability | Excellent (digital compounds) | Linear (more walls = more hours) |
| Risk | Low (no sunk cost) | Medium (framing + inventory tied up) |
| Fit for Jaipur | Neutral | Excellent (leverages tourism) |
| Faceless-friendly | Fully | Mostly (one café-owner chat/month) |
Start Plan A. Run it pure through Month 3. Then let the Month 3 Gate decide: if online traction is real (≥5 DMs/month) stay pure Plan A through Month 6; if it is weak (<2 DMs/month and IG growth <50/month) fork to Plan B at Month 4 — Jaipur's foot traffic compensates for an online cold start. You may also choose Plan B deliberately if you can find the extra hour and want the tourist market — but know it breaks the 2–3 hr/week constraint.
The Channel Stack
It looks like a crowd of channels. It is not — only two of them need original content conjured for them.
| Channel | Role | Wakes | Effort/wk | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram (Business) | Discover — home haunt | Month 1 | core | A & B |
| Pinterest (Business) | Discover — evergreen SEO | Month 1 | ~30 min | A & B |
| WhatsApp Business | Close — the threshold | Month 1 | embedded | A & B |
| YouTube Shorts | Discover — free cross-post | Month 1 | ~0 extra | A & B |
| Slow-burn discovery | Lurk M1, post M2 | ~1 hr | A & B | |
| Facebook Groups | Lead generation | Lurk M1, post M3 | ~30 min | A & B |
| Google Business Profile | Local discovery | Month 1 | one-time | A & B |
| Etsy (India shop) | International / NRI sales | Month 4 | low | A & B |
| One Indian marketplace | Credibility + domestic discovery | Month 5 | low | A & B |
| YouTube long-form | Discovery + better monetisation | Month 6 | per fortnight | A & B |
| Saatchi Art | International prestige | M6+ if rev >₹20k | low | A & B |
| Print-on-demand | Passive trickle | Month 7–9 | low | A & B |
| Own shop (Blinkstore/Instamojo) | Owned UPI checkout | Month 7–9 | low | A & B |
| Jaipur cafés / hotels | Offline sales | Month 4–5 | +1 hr | B only |
| Interior designers / B2B | Offline recurring revenue | Month 6 | +time | B only |
| Blog / Google SEO | Long-game organic | Month 6+ | optional | A & B |
| Discord / Telegram | — | — | — | Skip Year 1 |
Only Instagram and Pinterest need original content created for them. Everything else is either closing infrastructure (WhatsApp — you speak, you don't "post"), a zero-cost cross-post (YouTube Shorts — the same Reel re-uploaded), lurk-then-slow-burn (Reddit, Facebook groups), or a storefront set up once (Etsy, Mojarto, your own shop). Your creative effort pours into two channels. The rest is plumbing in the walls.
Two channels haunted well beat eight channels haunted badly.— the first law of the faceless artist
The Phased Timeline
Five phases. Each is a list of tasks in Do / How / When form, and each is sealed by a decision gate driven by real numbers.
Month numbers are kept generic so the guide works whenever you start. The festival cycle, which drives 40–60% of annual sales, is fixed to the calendar — see the year-wheel in Appendix A to bind it to your real start month.
The Setup Sprint
One-time, ~4–5 hours total. Every account exists and you have photographed work to post. No selling, no content yet — only preparation in the dark.
| Do | How | When |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve one handle everywhere | Pick a username like @yourname.studio; claim it on Instagram, Pinterest, Gmail, YouTube — identical everywhere | Day 1 |
| Instagram Business account | Convert to Business. Bio: "Jaipur acrylic + watercolour · Indian themes & spooky abstracts · Originals ₹2,000–₹25,000 · Ships pan-India + worldwide · DM to commission" | Day 1 |
| Pinterest Business account | Create it; set up 8–12 niche boards → Playbook 4.10 | Day 2 |
| WhatsApp Business + second SIM | Second SIM (Jio ~₹239/mo or Airtel ~₹179/mo) on a dual-app profile; business profile, skeleton catalog, quick replies, labels. Never use your personal number. → Playbook 4.2 | Day 2–3 |
| Google Business Profile + Search Console | Register as an "Artist" service-area business in Jaipur (postcard verification) → Playbook 4.10 | Day 3 |
| Linktree hub | Free Linktree linking IG, Pinterest, WhatsApp (and later Etsy) | Day 3 |
| Reddit account | Create it. Comment-only for the first 2 weeks — no posts | Day 4 |
| Join 8 Facebook groups | Indian Artists, Buy-Sell Paintings India, Jaipur groups, NRI city groups, festival/décor groups. Lurk only | Day 4 |
| Photograph 10+ existing pieces | Natural light, clean wall. Also shoot some against Jaipur pink walls / Rajasthani textiles for identity | Day 5–6 |
| Buy minimal supplies | Phone tripod (₹400), 10 small canvases or A4 paper (₹600), packaging starter (₹150). Total ≈ ₹1,150 | Day 6 |
Foundation
Build the content engine and validate your themes. Selling is secondary.
Months 1–4 are the haunted stretch — little or nothing sells. This is normal and universal. Track the non-revenue scorecard, not rupees.
Month 1 — light the first candle
- Do Paint 4–6 small pieces (A4 / 8×8"); photograph each in natural light.
- Do Post 4–6 Reels + 4 carousels. No selling yet — you are training the algorithm and yourself. → Playbook 4.1
- Do Reddit: comment only, build 50–100 karma. → Playbook 4.9
Months 2–3 — the engine at full cadence
| Do | How | When |
|---|---|---|
| Run the weekly content engine | 3 Reels + 1 carousel; cross-post every Reel to YouTube Shorts; 5 Pinterest Pins/day (batch Sunday, ~30 min); 1 WhatsApp Status/day → Playbooks 4.1, 4.2, 4.10 | Weekly |
| First Reddit posts | r/Mandalas or r/painting — match each sub's post format exactly → Playbook 4.9 | From M2 |
| Begin Facebook group posts | 2 groups/week — story + price + DM call-to-action + WhatsApp number | From M3 |
| Validate themes | 3 Instagram Story polls/week — "which should I paint next?" → Playbook 4.4 | Weekly |
| Open 5 commission slots | With a ₹500 token deposit — the strongest demand signal. If 0/5 fill, the concept is wrong | Month 3 |
| Reply fast; engage daily | Every comment/DM within 24h (WhatsApp within 12h); genuinely engage 20 artist accounts/day | Daily |
| Start a small email list | Free Linktree-linked form + a free printable lead magnet | Month 3 |
Online traction is real. Continue pure Plan A through Month 6.
Stay on Plan A, but audit your photography (lighting, background) and niche label.
Start the Jaipur offline track at Month 4 — foot traffic answers a cold start.
If DMs are low, the cause is almost always photography or your niche label — not your art. Audit those before changing anything bigger.
Monetise & Expand
Wake the money channels. The first decision is GST.
You are far below the turnover threshold. No action needed.
CA cost ~₹500–1,500/mo. Trade-off: 5% output GST without input tax credit — GST on paint, canvas and rent becomes a sunk cost. Unlocks the Etsy international shop and GST invoices for B2B.
Core tasks, Months 4–6 (both plans)
| Do | How | When |
|---|---|---|
| If you chose GST: register the GSTIN | Use ClearTax (Etsy's partner) or a local CA | Month 4 |
| Open the Etsy international shop | 10+ listings (A5/A4 prints + 2 originals). Needs GSTIN + Payoneer + $10 setup → Playbooks 4.6, 4.7 | Month 4 |
| List 10 works on Mojarto | Free listing reported, ~20% commission. Use ArtZolo only if pieces are ₹15k+ | Month 5 |
| First YouTube long-form (8 min) | Hands-only process video, one per fortnight → Playbooks 4.1, 4.10 | Month 6 |
| Keep the content engine running | Raise Pinterest to 1 fresh Pin/day | Ongoing |
Plan B fork — only if Month 3 sent you here, or you chose it
| Do | How | When |
|---|---|---|
| Visit 10 Jaipur cafés with a printed portfolio | Booklet ~₹500 (Vistaprint). Pitch 60/40 consignment → Playbook 4.8 | Month 4 |
| Sign 1 café; buy 5 matching frames | Chaura Rasta framing ~₹3,000. Plan B upfront ≈ ₹3,500 | Month 4 |
| First café wall live | 5 framed pieces + a QR code to WhatsApp; visit weekly to refresh | Month 5 |
| Approach 1 co-working + 1 boutique hotel | Begin cold-DMing interior designers, 5/week → Playbook 4.8 | Month 6 |
Drop spooky and dark for now; double down on mandala and deity — the proven Indian market.
It is working. Add no new channels — just keep going.
Add Saatchi Art, and begin interior-designer outreach.
Scale, Systematise, Decide
Systematise what works, bury what doesn't, and prepare the full-time decision.
| Do | How | When |
|---|---|---|
| Move to your own UPI shop | Blinkstore / Instamojo / DotPe — free tier, UPI checkout | M7–9 |
| Set up print-on-demand | Printrove or Qikink, 5–10 best-selling designs only → Playbook 4.3 | M7–9 |
| Optional: one paid-promotion test | ₹500–1,500 boost on a proven Reel — to test whether ads make sense, not to rely on them | Month 8 |
| Bury the worst-performing channel | Usually Facebook Groups or Reddit — be honest with the data | Month 8 |
| Brand-collab outreach | Pitch Brustro, Faber-Castell, Camlin, Pidilite/Hobby Ideas — once your portfolio is 25+ posts | Month 9 |
| Register your own domain | yourname.in, ~₹500/year | Month 10 |
| Run a "First Anniversary Sale" | Email list + Instagram + WhatsApp broadcast, combined | M11–12 |
| Apply to one open call / residency | PATI Jaipur Art Week, India Habitat Centre, Lalit Kala Akademi, JKK group shows | M10–12 |
| Plan B: build to 3 café walls + 1 co-working + 1 boutique hotel | → Playbook 4.8 | M7–12 |
Raise weekly hours, add B2B, and plan the full-time move.
Stay at 2–3 hr/week — the realistic glidepath to ₹1L/month by Month 24–36.
Move to workshops and teaching; keep art as a passive Etsy listing.
The Full-Time Decision
Going full-time is a Year 2–3 decision, never a Year 1 one at 2–3 hr/week.
The maths. Full-time needs roughly 8–15 sales/month at a ₹6,000–10,000 average order value. That requires ~10,000–25,000 engaged Instagram followers + 1,000+ email subscribers + 1–2 marketplace presences — and scaling effort from 2–3 hr/week to 25–40 hr/week.
| Monthly net | What it means |
|---|---|
| ₹40,000/mo | Bare-minimum survival full-time (single artist, living with family) |
| ₹80,000–₹1,20,000/mo | Comfortable full-time. Most solo Indian artists reach this in Year 2–3 |
Do Plan the faceless → voice/face pivot. A faceless account caps your highest-margin income — workshops and coaching. Around Month 18–24, add voice-on or face-on content so teaching revenue becomes possible. → Appendix G.
Pivot to teaching, illustration or a job. Keep art as a passive Etsy listing.
Sales are a lagging indicator. Keep going.
Cut to 1 hr/week, no targets, until recovered. Mental health comes first.
Playbooks
The repeating rites. The phases summon you here.
4.1 · Faceless Content Production
The rig. Phone on a desk-mount tripod (₹400), shoot overhead / top-down at 1080p 30fps.
The format. Record a 30-min–4-hr painting session; compress to a 15–60-second timelapse; edit in CapCut (free, no watermark). Audio: ASMR brush-stroke sound or a trending Indian audio. No voiceover needed.
The Reels formula:
- First 2 seconds — hook. Show the finished piece, or a striking mid-process shot. Text hook: "POV: you have a blank wall in your Jaipur apartment."
- Seconds 3–12 — body. Timelapse, brushstrokes, satisfying texture.
- Last 2 seconds — payoff. A clean shot of the final work styled on a wall.
- Caption. 1-line hook + 2–3 lines of context + 1 question + a call-to-action ("DM 'mandala' to commission a similar piece").
- Hashtags. 5–8 niche tags; rotate every 3–4 posts.
Hashtag laddering. As a small account, use tags with 10K–100K posts. Avoid tags with 500K+ posts — your post drowns instantly. Posting times (India): 8–10 AM, 1–2 PM, 7–10 PM IST; 8–9 PM gets the highest reach. Batch: record 5 Reels in one Sunday — faceless accounts grow on schedule, not inspiration.
YouTube. Cross-post every Reel as a Short from Day 1 (~0 extra effort). From Month 6, add one 8-minute long-form per fortnight (monetises 5–10× better per view). Title formula: [Subject] | [Medium] | [Style] | [Use-case].
4.2 · WhatsApp Closing Playbook
WhatsApp is the threshold where the sale is crossed. India has 800M+ WhatsApp users; an estimated 60–80% of sub-₹50k Indian online art sales close on WhatsApp, even when discovery happened elsewhere.
Setup (one Sunday, free):
- Second SIM (Jio ~₹239/mo or Airtel ~₹179/mo) on a dual-app profile. Never your personal number.
- Business profile: name, "Artist · Jaipur · Acrylic/Watercolour", website, email, "Jaipur, Rajasthan" (no home address), hours.
- Catalog: 10–15 paintings — title, dimensions, medium, price, "shipping extra" note. Update weekly.
- Payment: link a UPI ID. Flow: QR in chat → buyer pays → ship.
- Quick Replies: 8–10 templates — pricing, shipping, availability, commission process, payment instructions, packaging.
- Labels: Lead / Negotiating / Paid / Shipped / Delivered / Repeat.
- Broadcast lists: Past buyers, warm leads, Jaipur-local, NRI. Broadcast new work to past buyers first.
WhatsApp Status reaches your contacts with ~70%+ visibility (vs ~5–10% IG organic). Daily rhythm: morning WIP, afternoon finished piece, night studio shot (~10 min/day). Use it for flash sales and limited commission slots.
Within two messages, send — "For faster updates and shipping, would you like to chat on WhatsApp? Here's the number: +91…"
4.3 · Pricing Playbook
Method: square-inch pricing as the floor, tier labels as the customer-facing story.
₹ Starting rate (you, Month 1): ₹15–25/sq inch acrylic on canvas; ₹20–30/sq inch watercolour on paper. Includes materials.
| Size | Square inches | Raw | List at |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 (~8.3×11.7") | ~97 | ₹1,940 | ₹1,999 |
| 12×12" | 144 | ₹2,880 | ₹2,999 |
| 16×20" | 320 | ₹6,400 | ₹6,499 |
| 24×36" | 864 | ₹17,280 | ₹17,500 |
Tier labels (what the buyer sees):
- ₹500–₹2,000 — A5/A4 watercolours, mini originals, prints. High volume, top-of-funnel.
- ₹2,000–₹10,000 — 8×10" to 12×16" acrylic originals. The sweet spot.
- ₹10,000–₹25,000 — 16×20" to 24×30" originals, commissions, statement walls.
- ₹25,000–₹50,000 — large statement originals, multi-panel sets, premium commissions.
Raise prices when: you have sold 10 originals at the current price (+20%) · commissions you can't fulfil in 2 weeks (+30%) · you have been featured/curated or cleared an open call (+50%). Minimum: raise once a year. Avoid: friends-and-family discounts · free commissions "for exposure" · inconsistent prices across platforms · underpricing prints (A4 prints ₹599–899, A3 ₹1,200–1,800).
4.4 · Validation Before Painting
Never "paint, then hope." Before any piece that takes more than ~4 hours:
Demand is proven. Go.
Post the 3 on r/Mandalas, r/painting or r/spookyart; paint the top-voted, or pre-sell commission slots first.
Other free demand signals: pin all 10 sketches to a public Pinterest board — most saves in 14 days wins. Search the concept on Etsy — shops with favourites + sales prove demand. Use Google Trends + Pinterest Trends to time drops.
4.5 · Shipping & Packaging
| Courier | Indicative rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| India Post Speed Post | Local by slab: ≤50g ₹19 · 50–250g ₹24 · 250–500g ₹28 (+ GST). National 250–500g ~₹70–93 | Budget shipping, unframed pieces under ₹5,000; covers every PIN code |
| Delhivery | ~₹40 local, ~₹75 national / 500g | ₹5,000–25,000 pieces; solid tracking |
| Blue Dart | Surface ~₹80–100; Priority ~₹150–200 | ₹25,000+ pieces; overnight metro; insurance |
| Shiprocket (aggregator) | ~₹36–45/shipment; free "Lite" plan up to 5 orders/mo | Once you ship >5 orders/month; enables COD |
India Post rates were revised on 1 October 2025 — older "₹15 local" figures are obsolete. Verify on the Department of Posts site before quoting shipping.
Packaging (₹100–300 per shipment): glassine/smooth paper over the painted surface → 2–3 layers of bubble wrap → cardboard corners from old boxes → a 4 mm MDF panel cut to canvas size for rigidity → a 5-ply corrugated box (telescoping if over 18×24") → "Fragile / Do Not Bend" stickers. Always photograph every layer of packing before sealing — your only defence against a damage claim.
COD vs prepaid. ₹ COD is now only ~25–30% of Indian e-commerce orders nationally; it stays high (~58–65%) only in tier-2/3 cities and with low-trust buyers. Default to prepaid UPI. For any piece over ₹3,000, use a token + balance-on-delivery hybrid. COD carries ~26%+ return-to-origin risk plus damage risk on fragile art — offer it sparingly, mainly for prints.
4.6 · GST, Tax & Legal
GST on original hand-painted paintings (HSN 9701) is 5%, effective 22 Sept 2025 — but "without input tax credit." You charge 5% on a sale, but you cannot offset the 12–18% GST you paid on paint, canvas, framing and rent. That input GST becomes a permanent sunk cost — so 5%-without-ITC can be worse than the old 12%-with-ITC for a supply-heavy artist. Confirm with a CA before invoicing — this art-specific reading is single-sourced.
Registration threshold: ₹40 lakh aggregate turnover for a goods supplier (Rajasthan is a normal-category state) — you will not approach this in Year 1. But registration can be forced regardless of turnover if you open an Etsy India shop (Etsy mandates a GSTIN) or sell B2B with GST invoices. In Year 1, GST registration is a channel-access decision, not a turnover obligation. Income tax: treat art sales as business income; presumptive taxation under Section 44AD (receipts under ₹2 crore — pay tax on 6–8% of gross); keep a Google Sheet of all sales and expenses. Sole proprietorship: no registration needed — you are one by default.
4.7 · Marketplace Fees
| Platform | Setup & listing | Commission & fees | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy (India shop) | $10 one-time · $0.20 USD/listing | 6.5% transaction + 5% + ₹25 payment processing + 0.29% India regulatory fee; + Offsite Ads fee on ad-driven sales | International-only for Indian shops; GSTIN required; payouts via Payoneer |
| Mojarto | None reported | ~20% commission | NDTV-owned, gallery-style. Rate from secondary sources — confirm directly |
| ArtZolo | — | 30% commission + 12.5% on that commission | Per their own T&Cs |
| Saatchi Art | — | 40% on originals (artist keeps 60%) | Global; promo discounts further reduce payout. Worth it only at ₹15k+ |
| Artshaili | ₹999 one-time per painting (lifetime) | 20% commission on sale | India-focused; artist must offer free pan-India shipping |
Build the marketplace's cut into your listed price. Keep the same price everywhere — Etsy already shows fees inside the displayed price.
4.8 · Plan B — Jaipur Offline Playbook
Consignment model. The Indian café/hotel standard is 60/40 in the venue's favour, 3-month minimum review, you provide framed work. Outright purchase is rare.
"Hi [Manager], I love how [specific venue detail — wall, lighting, brand]. I'm a Jaipur-based artist proposing a 3-month rotating-art-wall pilot at zero risk to you. I provide framed work in your aesthetic, you display it, we split sales 60/40 in your favour. Could we meet for 15 minutes? I'll bring 3 sample pieces."
Verified Jaipur venues: Anokhi Café, Tapri Central, Curious Life Coffee Roasters, Bar Palladio, Cafe Palladio, On The House, Stepout Café, Stag, Nibs, Tarsh; hotels ITC Rajputana, Oberoi Rajvilas, Trident, RAAS, Samode Haveli; co-working 91springboard, WeWork, Workie, The Hive; Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing.
"Hi [Name], saw your [specific project — e.g. the Civil Lines bedroom from last month's reel] — the [specific detail] combination is exactly the aesthetic I paint for. I'm a Jaipur-based acrylic/watercolour artist; I'd love to put together 3 mockup pieces in your colour palette for your next mood board — no commitment, no charge. Can I send a portfolio link?"
Generic DMs get deleted — designers get 5–10 such pitches a week. Always reference a specific project. B2B pricing: trade discount 20–30% off retail · café/hotel consignment 60/40 · outright purchase 25–35% off. B2B requires GST registration — venues won't pay without an invoice. Framing (Jaipur): MI Road / Chaura Rasta / Raja Park — A4 ₹250–600, A3 ₹600–1,500, canvas + frame ₹1,500–4,000. Cash-flow reality: cafés pay 4–8 weeks after a sale; 10–20 framed pieces tie up ₹5,000–15,000 of working capital for 3–6 months.
4.9 · Community Channels: Reddit, Facebook, Discord
Reddit — a slow-burn discovery + portfolio channel, not a sales channel. ~1 hr/week.
Reddit removed public subscriber counts in September 2025; it now shows weekly visitors / contributions. Treat the "scale" column as rough — judge a sub live by its weekly-visitor metric and how recent its top posts are.
| Subreddit | Scale (rough) | Self-promo? | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| r/Mandalas | ~80K | Permissive — best fit | Your mandala work |
| r/painting | ~500K | Sparingly | "I painted this" + story posts |
| r/Watercolor | ~250K | Permissive | Process, technique |
| r/AcrylicPainting | ~80K | Permissive | Works-in-progress |
| r/IndianArtists, r/ArtisticIndia | low thousands | Friendlier, India-focused | Direct fit; warm small audience |
| r/spookyart, r/HorrorArt | ~10K / ~30K | Permissive | The spooky/dark track |
| r/ArtCommissions, r/Artstore | ~50K / ~10K | Designed for it | Commission + direct listings |
| r/Jaipur | ~30K | OK for "local artist" | Plan B offline launch |
| r/Art, r/India | very large | Strict / no-promo | Engage only, never promote |
Rules: comment-only for 2–4 weeks (build 50–100 karma) · match each sub's exact post format · never cross-post the same image to >2 subs in 24 hours (spam filter) · always disclose it's your own work · prefer "Self-Promo Saturday" threads · one account only. Realistic: 1 in 8 posts breaks 100 upvotes → 2–10 DMs → 0–2 sales.
Facebook Groups — surprisingly active among 35+ buyers with disposable income. Join 8–10; lurk 2 weeks; then post one painting/group/week with story + price + DM call-to-action + WhatsApp number. Most groups produce 0 leads; 1–2 produce 80%. Discord / Telegram — skip in Year 1. Thin Indian-art ecosystem; Telegram is mostly reseller spam.
4.10 · Search & SEO
Focus order: Pinterest SEO (Months 1–3) → YouTube SEO (Months 4–6) → Google/blog SEO (Month 6+, slowest but compounds).
Pinterest: vertical 1000×1500 px Pins only. Text overlay with a search phrase: "Black mandala painting for bedroom — Jaipur artist." Long-tail keywords beat clever copy. 8–12 niche boards. Every Pin links to Etsy, Linktree or an IG post. Result timeline: 4–24 weeks to meaningful clicks — do not quit at week 4. YouTube SEO: title formula [Subject] | [Medium] | [Style] | [Use-case]; first 125 characters of the description carry the keywords; pinned comment with WhatsApp number + commission price.
Google Business Profile (Day 1, ~90 min, free): register as an "Artist" in Jaipur, service-area business, postcard verification, get 5 honest reviews. You then appear in "Jaipur artist" Maps searches — a near-empty result today. Blog: only if you genuinely enjoy writing — 1 post/month, 1,500+ words, long-tail "how to style X art in Y room" topics; 8–14 months to traffic.
4.11 · The Two-Track Theme Strategy
You have two buyer segments. Do not merge them in one feed — a buyer hunting a Ganesha painting for their pooja room will not engage with skulls and crows next to it.
- Track A — Indian themes (mandala, deity, Madhubani/Warli/Gond/ Pichwai-inspired, miniature-inspired, earth-tone abstract). Your primary, proven market — domestic festival/wedding/gifting buyers + the NRI diaspora on Etsy. Jaipur is your unfair advantage: brand around the city, shoot against pink walls and Rajasthani textiles, lean into block-print and jaali motifs.
- Track B — Spooky / dark / abstract. Unproven at the affordable tier in India — treat it as a flagged experiment, not a co-equal track. Test 3–5 pieces on r/spookyart, r/HorrorArt and Etsy international over 90 days. Kill criterion: if it gets no traction in 90 days, deprioritise it and pour the hours into Track A.
Fork Keep tracks separate: one Instagram account with a clearly sectioned feed (carousel covers + organised Highlights) now. Two separate accounts only if Track A passes 10K followers and you can afford a part-time helper — it doubles the workload.
Appendix
Reference relics — the year-wheel, the projections, the scorecard, the artists, and the honest caveats.
A · The Festival Year-Wheel
This guide uses generic "Month 1–12" numbering. The festival cycle is fixed to the calendar — and it drives 40–60% of annual art sales. Find which Month-N each glowing arc lands in, counting from your real start month.
Example — if you start in June: Month 1 = June, so Raksha Bandhan → Diwali (Aug–Nov) falls in Months 3–6 — your first real sales push lands exactly when the validation work is done. Wedding season = Months 6–9. The Jaipur Literature Festival (★ January) ≈ Month 8. Plan Pinterest content 8–10 weeks ahead of each arc.
B · Revenue Projections
These are honest ranges, not promises. Most artists at 2–3 hr/week with zero starting audience land at the lower end.
Treat ₹15,000–₹60,000 as your realistic Year-1 outcome at 2–3 hr/week. Plan for the band; celebrate the top of it.
C · The Income Pyramid
For perspective — where Indian artists actually land. In Year 1, revenue is a lagging indicator; you are climbing from the base.
D · The Scorecard
In Year 1, revenue is a lagging indicator. Track these instead.
50 paintings completed · 1,500 IG followers · 30 Pinterest Pins/month · 100 WhatsApp business contacts · 1 marketplace listing live · (Plan B) 5 cold designer DMs/week.
Vanity — ignore: follower count, likes, post views.
Real — track weekly: DMs received, link clicks, WhatsApp inbound, Pinterest saves, Etsy favourites, repeat buyers, time-to-reply.
E · Artists to Reverse-Engineer
Follower counts are approximate, as of early 2026, and could not be live-verified (Instagram needs a logged-in session). Sourav Joshi was re-verified 2026-05-20: ~5.17M on the art channel, ~40.4M on the vlog channel.
| Handle | ~Followers | Niche | Why study |

| @saudamini.madra | ~131K | Mandala / zentangle | Brand-deal playbook |
| @mandalabyvaishnavi | ~136K | Mandala | Workshop monetisation |
| @sikander_watercolor_artist | ~152K | Watercolour temple | Watercolour + religious crossover |
| @artsybyappy (Apoorva MP) | ~26K | Mandala coaching | The coaching pivot |
| @craftedlove_ (Varsha) | ~9K | Mandala | A realistic 1–2-year benchmark |
| @priyank.gajera | small-mid | Dark surrealism | Closest Indian "dark" analog |

Study method (5 artists/week, ~15 min each): screenshot the bio · count posts/week over the last 4 weeks · compute engagement rate (avg likes ÷ followers × 100 — over 2% is healthy) · note caption, call-to-action and hashtag structure · do one mystery-shopper DM · save their 3 best posts to a "swipe file" board.
F · What NOT to Do
- Underprice. A ₹500 12×16" original destroys your future pricing power. ₹15/sq inch floor, even Day 1.
- Free commissions "for exposure." Barter only with a named influencer/designer whose audience truly overlaps yours, one piece.
- Spread across 8 platforms in Month 1. Two done well beats eight done badly.
- Chase every trending style. Pick one aesthetic, hold it 6+ months.
- Post only when inspired. Faceless accounts grow on schedule. Batch-record.
- NFT and pure-AI-art rabbit holes. No real Indian buyer base at these price points.
Hard rules: never run paid ads in Year 1 · never let a WhatsApp/IG DM sit longer than 12 hours · never list one physical piece on >3 platforms at once · never give a discount over 15% in Year 1.
Exposure pays no rent.— remember this when someone asks for free work
G · Plan C — Alternative Income Paths
If direct art sales stall, these are proven pivots — and good additions anyway:
- Workshops — the highest-margin pivot. ₹1,500–5,000/student × ~8 students, monthly = ₹12,000–40,000/month. Online via Zoom.
- Skillshare / Domestika / YouTube tutorials — passive; $50–500/month typical.
- Licensing — sell artwork as patterns to textile, tile or stationery brands. Royalties 5–15%.
- Illustration commissions — wedding invitations, book covers, brand mascots. ₹3,000–50,000/project.
- Offline teaching in Jaipur — a weekend kids' class at home, ₹500/child × 8 = ₹4,000 every Saturday.
H · Honest Caveats & Uncertainties
- The 2–3 hr/week constraint is genuinely tight. At it you outpace ~70% of attempts — but you will not reach ₹1 lakh/month in Year 1.
- Revenue figures are ranges, not promises. Plan for the lower end.
- GST 5%-without-ITC may leave a supply-heavy artist worse off than the old 12%-with-ITC. Confirm with a CA.
- Etsy India is international-only — it reaches NRI/foreign buyers, not domestic ones.
- Spooky/dark art has no proven affordable market in India — a flagged 90-day experiment, not a safe bet.
- COD's national share has fallen to ~25–30%; default to prepaid UPI.
- Reddit removed public subscriber counts (Sept 2025) — subreddit sizes here are approximate.
- Going viral can compress 18 months of growth into 2 weeks (~1 in 50 artists/year). Keep a populated, priced Etsy/IG so you are ready when it strikes.
- "Full-time" depends on your cost of living, not industry averages.
